Danish international Mikkel Bech admits he is undecided as to whether he will take what would be his final shot at FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship glory this term.
Bech would start this year’s competition as one of the favourites to triumph, despite finishing a disappointing 10th last year.
He picked up bronze in 2012 and has established himself as one of the sport’s top juniors, having won Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup gold with Denmark and made multiple SGP appearances.
"I think my mind has been pointing too much at this under-21 title. My focus hasn’t been where it should be."
- Mikkel Bech
But Bech isn’t certain he will take on the series this year as he bids to avoid fatigue and lift his league form after a patchy 2014 campaign.
He said: “As it looks right now, I don’t know what I will do with the under-21s. I’m still planning with my team what we’ll be doing and I’m meeting with my mental coach.
“In one sense, I want to do it. In another, I’m not sure. I missed out so many meetings last year because of the under-21s and I don’t really feel I got anything out of it.
“I had a bit of bad luck in the series last year and finished 10th. I know that if things went really well, I could be in the top three. I see myself as one of the world’s top under-21 riders.
“I’ve been working too hard and I think my mind has been pointing too much at this under-21 title. My focus hasn’t been where it should be – it has been in a completely different place. It has been on the future and not what’s happening now.
“One of the reasons I’m thinking about racing is it’s my last chance forever to win this title. I’m still speaking with the national coach (Anders Secher) and of course he wants me to do it. He sees me as a strong card in the under-21s and definitely thinks I can be in the top three.
“That’s what he wants, but I don’t want to feel too pressured to do it. I have to feel inside that I want to do it. If I do it, I want to go all in – nothing or everything.”
